Pump Rooms Container for Construction Projects in Ireland: Planning Your Site Setup in 2026

When a construction project needs pumping equipment on site, the space around that equipment matters too. A Pump Rooms Container can provide a practical, secure space without waiting for a permanent building.

That matters in 2026. Ireland is moving ahead with major water and wastewater infrastructure projects while new housing continues to increase demand.

In March 2026, the Government introduced its Developer-Led Infrastructure initiative for wastewater services. It allows developers to deliver wastewater infrastructure as part of housing schemes. It also provides for temporary bridging infrastructure where an agreed interim solution is needed before permanent capacity becomes available.

For contractors, this raises an important question: how should specialist equipment space fit into the wider site compound?

Here’s what to consider before your unit arrives.

Why pump room planning matters in 2026

Ireland’s wastewater collection system includes around 26,000 kilometres of underground sewers and more than 2,300 pumping stations, according to the EPA. That gives you an idea of how important pumping infrastructure is to the country’s wastewater network.

Major projects are also moving forward. Uisce Éireann began preparatory works on the Greater Dublin Drainage Project in June 2026. Once operational, it will provide wastewater treatment capacity equivalent to approximately 500,000 people and support housing across north Dublin, Meath and Kildare.

The Farganstown Wastewater Project in Meath provides another useful example. It includes a new wastewater pumping station and 2.4 kilometres of sewer pipeline. The project is intended to support 1,600 new homes in the short term.

These projects differ in scale, but they highlight the same practical point. Specialist equipment needs suitable space, reliable access and room for maintenance.

What is a Pump Rooms Container?

A Pump Rooms Container is a converted container designed to house pumping equipment and related systems. The exact configuration depends on the equipment, access requirements, ventilation and the site itself.

It shouldn’t be treated as a standard storage container with a pump placed inside.

Before choosing a unit, consider the equipment footprint, access points, electrical requirements, ventilation and maintenance clearances. Think about how technicians will enter the space and move equipment during repairs.

The earlier you answer these questions, the easier the final site setup becomes.

1. Choose the location carefully

Start with the wider site plan rather than the container itself.

Your Pump Rooms Container needs to sit somewhere practical for the pumping system and accessible for maintenance. At the same time, it shouldn’t interfere with vehicle routes, pedestrian areas or other site facilities.

Consider ground conditions, drainage, access roads, lifting requirements and future construction phases. You should also think about how the unit will be reached after other parts of the development are built.

This matters whether you’re working in Westmeath or Offaly, or on a larger development in Meath or Dublin. Local conditions may differ, but access planning remains essential.

2. Plan equipment access before delivery

A pump room can look spacious on a drawing and feel very different once equipment is installed.

Measure the equipment carefully, then allow room for people to work around it.

Think about doors, loading routes and lifting equipment. If a major component needs to be removed later, how will it leave the room?

This is where customisation can help. Shipcon provides shipping container conversions that can be designed around the intended use, including tailored layouts and access arrangements.

3. Think about security and weather protection

Construction sites can be exposed environments. Specialist equipment shouldn’t be left unnecessarily vulnerable to weather, unauthorised access or general site activity.

Shipcon’s anti-vandal cabins use heavy-duty steel construction, secure locking systems and weather-resistant insulated structures. They’re designed for construction and industrial environments where secure, portable space is required.

For a Pump Rooms Container, security should form part of the original planning conversation. Consider locking arrangements, access control, ventilation, and protection from the elements.

4. Consider delivery and positioning

Getting the right unit is only part of the job. You also need to get it onto the site safely and position it where it needs to operate.

Shipcon provides truck and crane hire for transporting and positioning heavy goods and containers. The company is based in Tyrrellspass, Westmeath, beside the M6, and provides nationwide delivery.

This can simplify planning for contractors working across Longford, Cavan, Leitrim and Roscommon, as well as projects in Kildare, Louth and Tipperary.

Discuss access early. A site entrance that works for ordinary vehicles may not provide enough room for a container delivery or crane operation.

5. Leave room for future changes

Construction projects rarely stay exactly as planned.

Equipment requirements can change. Site layouts evolve. Temporary infrastructure may eventually give way to permanent infrastructure.

The 2026 Developer-Led Infrastructure initiative specifically provides for temporary bridging wastewater infrastructure during an interim period, subject to agreement with Uisce Éireann.

That makes flexibility worth considering from the beginning. A Pump Rooms Container may form part of a temporary setup, a longer-term operational arrangement, or a wider phased project.

Ask yourself what happens six months from now. Will you need another unit? Will access change? Could additional equipment require more room?

Planning around these questions can prevent expensive site changes later.

6. Coordinate the pump room with the rest of the compound

Your pump room shouldn’t be planned in isolation.

Construction teams may also need site offices, welfare facilities, drying rooms, storage and secure operational areas.

Shipcon supplies site offices and welfare units with options including heated drying spaces, changing areas, lighting and electrical supply.

The company also provides storage containers, anti-vandal cabins and bespoke container conversions.

For projects across Ireland, this means you can consider the entire compound rather than sourcing every unit separately.

That can be particularly useful for contractors working across Westmeath, Offaly, Meath, Longford, Cavan and Leitrim. It also applies to larger projects around Kildare, Dublin, Louth, Tipperary and Roscommon.

What should contractors ask before ordering?

Before committing to a Pump Rooms Container, prepare a simple project checklist:

What equipment will the unit house?
What are the equipment dimensions?
Where will technicians enter and work?
What ventilation is required?
How will large components be moved?
Where can the unit be safely positioned?
How will it be secured?
Is the requirement temporary or long-term?
Could the equipment or site layout change?
How will the unit be delivered and positioned?

You may also need to coordinate the container with engineering drawings, electrical plans, drainage arrangements, and wider site logistics.

The exact requirements will depend on your project. A container supplier can help with practical layout and modification discussions, while specialist engineering and regulatory requirements should be confirmed with the relevant professionals.

Why 2026 makes this worth planning now

Ireland’s infrastructure programme is moving forward on several fronts.

In February 2026, Uisce Éireann announced procurement milestones for both the Greater Dublin Drainage Project and the Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region. Together, these projects represent more than €7 billion of planned investment in Irish water and wastewater infrastructure.

At the same time, the Government’s Developer-Led Infrastructure initiative is creating another route for wastewater infrastructure to support housing delivery.

The message for contractors is straightforward. Specialist site infrastructure needs to be planned alongside the wider project, not added as an afterthought.

Whether your project is in Westmeath, Offaly, Meath, Longford, Cavan, Leitrim, Kildare, Dublin, Louth, Tipperary or Roscommon, start with how the equipment needs to work.
